How Much CBD Should I Take?

If you’ve read about the health benefits that CBD offers, you’re probably eager to give it a try. But you might not be sure how much CBD you should take, or whether you take CBD as an oil, or in some other way. Every person is different, and the best dosage for you depends on several things, including:

  • whether you have used CBD before
  • how sensitive you are to CBD
  • why you want to use CBD
  • how severe your symptoms are
  • your weight

If you haven’t used CBD before, you won’t know how sensitive you are to it until you try. So the best idea is to start with a low dose, such as 10 mg per day, and see how much it helps you. You might well find the low dose is enough, but if not you can increase the dosage a little at a time, until you find the amount of CBD that gives the results you need. And I suggest that you use the same method if you haven’t taken CBD for a long time. Your body chemistry might have changed since the last time, so you might react differently this time.

CBD Dosage for Specific Illnesses

As I’ve explained elsewhere, you can use CBD to help with mental, emotional and physical problems. Like many people you might use it to ease feelings of anxiety or depression, or to help yourself cope with a stressful lifestyle. But you might also use it for many other reasons, such as for pain relief or to help in cancer treatment. If your main reason for taking CBD is to improve general well-being and help with everyday stress, you’ll probably find that a low dose (for example, between 10 mg and 50 mg per day) will be enough. And when you have to deal with more stressful situations, you can increase the dose slightly until your life settles down again. If you are suffering from chronic pain (such as fibromyalgia or neuropathy) you might find that a medium dose works well. I’d suggest that, depending on your weight and how bad the pain is, you try between 25 mg and 75 mg per day. For times that you’re in severe pain, or as part of a course of treatment for cancer, you may need a high dose, such as between 40 mg and 150 mg per day, depending on your weight. If you’re new to CBD, I don’t recommend that you go straight to a high dose. It’s far better to start low and gradually increase the dose over a few weeks or even months.

What’s the True CBD Dosage for Epilepsy?

Note that, for epilepsy, most doctors recommend a daily intake of between 5 mg and 10 mg per kilogram (that is, per 2.2 lbs) of body weight. But a survey of the treatment of children and teenagers with epilepsy suggests that a slightly higher dose might be more suitable. Almost three-quarters of the doctors in the survey calculated the dose to be between 10 mg to 25 mg per kilogram.

This chart gives suggested daily intake of Cannabidiol (CBD) according to your body weight in stones and the severity of pain or other symptoms. You might not want to take the full daily dose at once, particularly with the larger amounts. The table is given only as a guide. It is based on the recommendations given by a number of CBD suppliers and other sources available to the public.

Scientific studies have shown that most people can take a large amount of CBD without causing themselves any harm. In fact, results suggest that humans can safely consume up to about 1,500 mg a day. But it’s also possible that taking such extremely high doses every day for a long time could damage your liver. So I would recommend that you don’t exceed the doses shown in the chart above.
